Eye Exams - Laser Vision Correction (LASIK & PRK)

Laser vision correction (such as LASIK and PRK) may be an excellent alternative to wearing contact lenses or eyeglasses. If you are an appropriate candidate, laser eye surgery is a safe and effective way to correct your vision. However, it is important to know that laser vision procedures such as LASIK and PRK will not provide better vision than eyeglasses or contact lenses, nor is laser eye surgery a permanent solution. At eye-bar, our optometrists are very knowledgeable about the various types of vision correction surgeries available and would be happy guide you in understanding the procedures and determine if it is right for you. Both Dr. Amy Bakelaar & Dr. Ross McKenzie have extensive clinical experience working alongside laser eye surgeons and have provided post-operative care to thousands of Edmonton and Sherwood Park patients.

If you have already had laser eye surgery, our eye-bar optometrists are happy to see you for your annual eye exams. Routine eye examinations are still important to monitor for eye health and vision changes. Having 20/20 vision does not make one immune to developing eye disease. One of the greatest risks after refractive surgery is failure to have an annual eye health examination and delaying diagnosis of potentially devastating eye diseases.

Steps involved in refractive eye surgery (LASIK, PRK or refractive implants):

  1. Laser or Refractive Surgery Consultations

Not everyone is a good candidate for laser eye surgery. A refractive assessment will determine if you are a good candidate for surgery and which procedure is the most appropriate one for you. During a refractive laser surgery consultation, the optometrists will discuss the pros and cons of the available surgeries, such as LASIK and PRK. We also provide adviseinsight and recommendations on lens implants and refractive lens exchanges. Eye-bar is not affiliated with any surgical sites; our focus is to help you determine which procedure is right for you. Your eye health and vision is the top priority for any surgical considerations.

  2. Referral to a Refractive Surgery Centre

Following your consultation, eye-bar can arrange a formal consultation with the surgical centre of your choice and will forward your most recent eye exam information directly to the surgery staff.

  3. Post-Operative Care

After your refractive procedure, you will require post-operative care to ensure proper healing and optimal visual outcomes. You can do post-operative care at your surgery centre or you can elect to have a co-management relationship where an eye-bar optometrist performs all the follow-up appointments and sends reports to the centre on your behalf. Our doctors have worked in refractive surgery centres for many years and have co-managed thousands of patients who have had LASIK or PRK. By doing your post-operative care at eye-bar you enjoy the expertise of experienced doctors but with more flexible appointment scheduling and reduced waiting times.
